There are plenty of books to discuss the theory of different types of TA/calorimetry but they deal mainly with the general principles and applications chiefly for organic and inorganic materials. The last trends in the secondary and university education clearly show that classical natural sciences (mathematics, physics, etc.) are “stepchildren”. Due to this fact, thermodynamics and its application for biological/medical problems are not in the “middle of the heart” of medical doctors.

However, recently the editors of the Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry and Thermochimica Acta have realized that they have to open into this field due to the increasing number of papers coming from bio- life- and medical sciences. It turned out that TA and calorimetry are proved to be the only method by which the change in the heat capacity of any system can be directly monitored. In this way the structural consequences of biological events can be interpreted.

It was a good feeling to inspire young medical doctors to apply this technique in a relatively wide range of medical problems; e.g.: the diagnostic application, testing of new surgical techniques, orthopedic and traumatic applications as well as pharmaceutical use

This book is the second compilation of this topic. The first one was published in the successful series of Hot Topics in Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry entitled “The Nature of Biological Systems as Revealed by Thermal Methods” published by Kluver Academic Pubshers. The present book “Thermal Analysis in Medical Application” may find a good acceptation in the bio-community because of the following reasons:

- biological calorimetry (and of course thermal analysis) finds an increasing interest, but it is step-mother like treated in textbooks, monographs and journals.

- The spectrum of the book is rather broad, from medical diagnosis, over new surgical techniques to testing the consequences of surgical operations.

- It is a macroscopic method for rather inhomogeneous material.

- It may stimulates corresponding research and perhaps establish better contact between very distant fields like Natural Sciences and Medicine, e.g.

- It can be used as a non-invasive method.

No book with such an orientation is known to us.  We tried to summarize the results obtained in the last years and we do hope they will be valuable information for all of us.
